When you go to Cusco, one of the extra tours you should do, maybe the first one (excluding Machu Picchu), is the tour to the mountain called Rainbow Mountain, locally known as Vinicunca. You start with a 2.5-hour car ride from Cusco to begin the hike. From the moment you start walking, you witness magnificent views. However, this tour has a unique feature that sets it apart from the others. While the starting point is at an altitude of 4,300 meters, you reach an altitude of 5,100 meters at the summit of the mountain. This means there is not enough oxygen for you to breathe comfortably. Thanks to the medications and a special liquid that the tour guide provides, you feel slightly better for a while, but climbing up a steep slope and dealing with oxygen deficiency really pushes your limits. As you struggle to move forward on this path, the local Peruvians you see in this photo tell you that they can take you up with horses. A tempting offer! Most of them cannot speak English, but somehow you manage to communicate. Although I stubbornly refused to ride the horse while climbing, I completed the entire way back with a pleasant journey on the horse since I had no energy left. An absolutely amazing experience from start to finish!
