About This PhotoThe Story Behind
In the Masai tribe, men can have multiple wives. A man who is wealthy enough can have as many wives as he wants in exchange for a cow. However, most of the wives he takes are often young girls who have not even reached the age of 12 or 13. In order to prevent these girls from being married off at such a young age, a retired teacher named Hellen Nkurayia has founded a charity organization called Enkiteng Lepa. Girls attend school at a school built by this organization during school hours, and outside of school, they stay in a village created to protect widowed women. Please visit their website here.
