The Istanblue
About This PhotoThe Story Behind
I captured this stunning shot of Istanbul, titled "The Istanblue," from Büyük Çamlıca Tepesi—the highest of Istanbul’s famed seven hills, rising approximately 288 meters above sea level on the Asian side in Üsküdar. This scenic hilltop is more than just a viewpoint—it’s a beautifully landscaped park with monumental trees, flower gardens, fountains, and Ottoman-style teahouses and cafés managed by the city.
Using my Canon EOS 7D, I framed the Bosphorus’s serene blue tones under the soft early-morning light. Shooting in Aperture Priority at f/8 with a long 8-second exposure, I achieved balanced lighting that highlights the tranquil water and iconic skyline. I set the ISO to 100 for clarity and used a focal length of 75 mm. Captured on July 3, 2011, the image reflects Istanbul’s timeless beauty viewed from its majestic heights.
The name "Istanblue" is a blend of “Istanbul” and “blue”—chosen to reflect the rich mix of deep and soft blues that painted the sky at that moment. The atmosphere was so tranquil and mesmerizing that I wanted the title itself to echo the serene beauty of the scene, while also playing on the city’s name.
What makes Büyük Çamlıca Tepesi even more special today is its mix of history, culture, and modern architecture: it features the grand Çamlıca Mosque—completed in 2019 and capable of accommodating up to 63,000 worshippers—and the sleek Çamlıca Tower, a 369-meter-tall telecommunications tower with observation decks and restaurants, inaugurated in 2021. These landmarks complement the natural beauty, making the hill a must-visit for both locals and tourists.
