Machu Picchu is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World declared in 2007 and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. It was built between 1450 and 1460 by the Inca emperor Pachacuti. However, it was abandoned during the Spanish Conquest approximately eighty years after its establishment. Some research claims that the native population died due to a disease called Smallpox before the conquest. Despite the Spaniards destroying all structures related to the Incas for religious reasons during the conquest, Machu Picchu remained undiscovered until today because they could not find it. Its rediscovery was made possible in 1911 by the American historian Hiram Bingham. When Hiram found it, the site was unrecognizable due to trees and overgrown grass. For centuries, Machu Picchu remained hidden from the eyes, like a lost and mysterious city. It contains terraced fields, temples, houses belonging to the nobility, and squares for the common people. It is known that various animals, including virgin girls, were sacrificed to the gods in the temples. Machu Picchu has a very impressive and mystical atmosphere, and there is still a population of llamas living there.
