About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Autumn tundra near Tromsdalen in Tromsø, Norway, photographed during my time in the Arctic north. I made this photo on a calm day in the hills around Tromsdalen, where shallow pools, low vegetation, and wide mountain slopes come together in a very quiet landscape.

What I liked most was how open everything felt. The foreground is full of wet ground, yellow and green grasses, and still water reflecting the sky, while the background stretches out into rounded ridges with a light dusting of early snow. The darker mountain on the right gives the scene some weight, but the overall feeling is soft and peaceful. The clouds were moving across the sky while patches of blue opened up between them, and that mix gave the land a nice balance of cool and warm tones.

I didn’t want to overcomplicate this one. The scene already had enough going on with the small pond, the bend of water farther back, and the layered hills beyond. I framed it wide to keep that sense of space and to show how the water threads through the tundra. The low angle of the light helped bring out texture in the grass and moss without making the scene feel harsh.

This is the kind of landscape I always slow down for. There’s no dramatic event happening, just a quiet piece of northern Norway showing its colors between summer and winter. I like photos like this because they say a lot without needing much. For me, that mix of open sky, cold air, and muted autumn color is a big part of what makes the Tromsø area so memorable.
