About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Tromsø and Tromsøysundet seen from Storsteinen above the Fjellheisen upper station in Tromsø, Norway, on an autumn day with low cloud and breaks of light. I made this panorama while looking out from the mountainside over the city, the water, and the long line of peaks beyond.

What I like most in this view is how much of Tromsø opens up at once. The neighborhoods spread across the island below, the shoreline curves around the harbor, and the islands and sounds lead your eye toward the darker mountains in the distance. There is a patch of sunlight falling across part of the town while the rest sits under heavy blue-grey cloud, and that contrast gave the whole scene a quiet, slightly dramatic mood without feeling overdone.

The foreground helps ground the picture for me. Instead of only showing the city far below, the rough mountain slope and the small pond make it clear that I was standing high above Tromsø, not just using a long lens from across the water. It feels like the kind of view you get after stepping away from the cable car area and taking a few minutes to look around properly.

I kept the framing wide because the scene needed space. A tighter crop would have lost the connection between the hillside, the city, the water, and the mountain wall in the background. The wide end of my XF16-80mm worked well for that, letting me keep the panorama natural without making the city look too distant. The weather was changing quickly, so I waited for one of those short moments when the light broke through and gave shape to both the land and the sea.
