About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Phang Nga Bay near Krasom, Thailand, on a humid, misty day. I took this view from the shoreline around Ao Phang Nga National Park, looking through thick tropical plants toward the limestone karsts rising out of the water.

What pulled me in was how many layers of green were packed into one frame. The leaves in the foreground are dark and heavy, almost closing in from all sides, while the bay opens up in a softer turquoise-green beyond them. Farther back, the cliffs fade into haze, so the color shifts again from rich jungle green to pale blue-green. That gradual change is really what the photo is about for me.

I liked the natural frame right away. Branches hang over the top, vines and shrubs fill the lower edge, and the opening in the middle leads the eye straight to the rock formations. It felt like standing inside the forest and finding a quiet window onto the bay. The water was very calm, and the light was flat because of the mist, which helped keep the whole scene soft and even instead of harsh.

The limestone islands in this part of Phang Nga Bay have a shape that always feels slightly unreal, especially when low cloud or sea haze wraps around them. On a clear day the contrast would be stronger, but I actually prefer this softer look. It makes the distant cliffs recede gently and gives the scene a still, quiet mood.

I made this with my Canon EOS 7D, and the wider view helped me keep both the dense foreground and the open water together in one composition. I didn’t want to isolate a single cliff. I wanted the feeling of being surrounded by tropical growth, with the bay revealing itself little by little through the leaves. That mix of enclosed jungle and open sea is what I remember most from this spot.
