How this map is built

Every pin comes from a real file. 1,321 of the photographs on this site carry the GPS coordinates my camera recorded at the moment of the exposure, and those coordinates are exactly what you see plotted here: 42 countries and 257 cities, from the savannah in Kenya and the Andes in Peru to Icelandic coastlines, Cuban street corners, and quiet early mornings in Japan.

Zoom in and the clusters break apart into individual frames. Click any pin to open that photograph, where you can read the story behind it along with the camera, the lens, and the settings I used. The pins follow the files rather than a wish list, so the map is a record of where I have actually stood with a camera.

If you would rather browse by place than by pin, the destination galleries group the same photographs by country and city, and the photographer's guides turn the longest of these trips into day-by-day itineraries with route maps and the exact spots the photos came from.
