About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Christiansborg Palace and the spire of Christiansborg Palace Chapel in central Copenhagen, Denmark, photographed in late afternoon light. I made this frame from Slotsholmen, looking across the palace roofs as the low sun picked out the copper tower and the bronze quadriga.
What caught me first was the contrast between the warm metal and the cool sky. The upper part of the chapel spire has that weathered green copper that Copenhagen does so well, while the lower sections still hold a deeper brown tone where the sun hits them. Just below it, the bronze chariot group on the roofline adds another layer and gives the composition a strong foreground shape instead of turning into a simple architectural close-up.
I like that the scene feels formal without being stiff. The tower is full of small details, but from this angle the shapes stay clean and readable. The statues around the lantern, the gold ornaments near the top, and the cross above everything else all stand out clearly against the moving cloud cover. The sky was doing a lot of work for me too. It was bright, textured, and soft enough to separate the architecture without pulling attention away from it.
I shot it from street level on Slotsholmen, close to the palace complex, using a moderate telephoto reach to compress the layers a little. That helped bring the bronze horses and the chapel tower closer together and made the relationship between them feel more intentional. I didn’t want a wide city view. I wanted the frame to stay focused on materials, lines, and the way the late sun briefly turned the copper and bronze into the main subject.
For me, this is one of those very Copenhagen moments: historic rooftops, oxidized metal, and a patch of clear light arriving at just the right time.
