Shinjuku, Japan

About This PhotoThe Story Behind

I captured this photo during an evening stroll through Omoide Yokocho in Shinjuku, Japan. This lively alleyway is a great spot to witness Tokyo's vibrant street life. In the photo, you can see locals unwinding after a busy day at work, enjoying meals at the tiny eateries that line the lane. The atmosphere here is always bustling, with the glow from the overhead signs giving everything a warm, inviting look.

I used my FUJIFILM X-T5 with a XF16-80mm lens, which helped me capture the depth and detail of this busy scene. The wide angle of the lens was perfect for getting the whole vibe of the street, with all the neon signs and bustling crowds. This spot, also known as 'Memory Lane,' has been around since post-war Japan, and it's famed for its tiny bars and yakitori stalls. People come here for a taste of traditional Tokyo, just like they did decades ago.

It's fascinating to see people of all ages here, from seasoned locals to curious tourists. As I stood there taking photos, I could smell the delicious aromas of grilled chicken and hear the lively chatter of friends catching up over drinks. It's a place where you can really feel the soul of the city coming alive at night. Omoide Yokocho is a little slice of old Tokyo amid the skyscrapers and bright lights of Shinjuku, offering a glimpse into the everyday lives of the city's people. It's one of my favorite places to photograph because of that mix of history and modernity.
