About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Buda Castle Hill and Matthias Church in Budapest, Hungary, seen from the Pest side of the Danube near Belgrád rakpart. I made this photo from the river bank on a bright day, with layered clouds moving over the skyline.
What I like here is how several parts of Buda line up in one frame without feeling crowded. Matthias Church sits high on the left with its patterned roof and tall white spire, while the red-brick Saint Francis of Assisi Church stands closer to the water on the right. Between them, the slope of Castle Hill is packed with older buildings, roofs, trees, and walls, so the whole view feels dense but still easy to read.
I was standing low by the water, looking across the Danube toward the Buda side, which gives the scene a straight, grounded perspective. The river in the foreground keeps some space around the city, and the moored boats help fix the scale. Without them, the churches and the hill behind them would feel more distant. With them, the view feels lived in and real, more like a normal day in Budapest than a postcard version of it.
The light was clear but not harsh, and the clouds did a lot of the work. They add weight to the sky and give the skyline a bit more contrast without taking attention away from the buildings. I used a mid-range focal length on my Canon EOS 7D with the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8, which let me keep the composition tight enough to connect the churches, hillside, and boats in one frame. For me, the photo is really about that balance between the river, the city, and the hill rising behind it.
