About This PhotoThe Story Behind

I took this photo during an evening stroll in Vancouver’s historic Gastown district, capturing the iconic Gastown Steam Clock as it emitted its famous puffs of steam. The clock, one of the few functioning steam clocks in the world, is set against the backdrop of a beautifully illuminated red brick building, adding a sense of warmth to the cool evening atmosphere. The lighting was challenging but rewarding, with the soft glow from the street lamps blending seamlessly with the subtle color of the night sky. The clock, built in 1977, was designed by horologist Raymond Saunders and has since become a beloved local landmark. Around the clock, you can see the charming details of the Gastown neighborhood, with wrought-iron street lamps and hanging flower baskets completing the scene. This juxtaposition of modern energy and historic charm gives Gastown its unique ambiance. I used a longer exposure to capture the vibrant colors and ensure the steam trails were smooth yet visible. This photo reflects my love for capturing urban scenes, especially those with such historical significance.
