About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Lake Bled in Bled, Slovenia, photographed from the lakeside near Mlino on a bright late-afternoon visit. I framed the view across the water toward the Church of St. Martin, with rowing shells moving through the middle of the lake and traditional pletna boats tied up in the foreground.
What I liked here was how everyday the scene felt. Lake Bled is often shown from the high viewpoints above the water, but I wanted a quieter angle from the shore, closer to the boats and trees. The light was low enough to bring out the warm wood tones of the pletna boats and the fresh green leaves around the edge of the frame, while the church tower and the rocky hillside behind it gave the background a strong shape.
The rowers added just enough movement without taking over the picture. They break up the calm surface of the lake and make the place feel lived in rather than staged. I also liked the contrast between the still boats at the dock and the long narrow shells passing by farther out. It gave me a simple foreground and background relationship that made the composition easy to build.
I shot this with a Canon EOS 7D and an EF 24-105mm lens, which worked well for this kind of scene because I could keep a natural perspective while pulling the church and shoreline a bit closer. I didn’t want anything too wide. A tighter frame helped me keep the attention on the boats, the water, and the layers of trees, buildings, and hills beyond.
For me, the photo is really about the calm side of Bled. Not the postcard version from above, but the view you get while standing by the lake and watching the afternoon pass.
