About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Monks at the Phuket Big Buddha in Karon, Thailand. I photographed this inside the shrine area at Nakkerd Hill during a visit in daylight, with candlelight and the dark interior shaping the mood of the frame.
What caught my eye was the mix of everyday temple details around the framed portrait. The two candles at the bottom throw a warm glow onto the picture, while the rest of the room falls away into shadow. Off to the right, the wall clock adds a plain, almost unexpected detail that makes the scene feel lived in rather than staged. I like that contrast. The setting is clearly devotional, but it also feels practical and human.
I made the photo straight on, keeping the frame centered so the portrait, candles, incense, and clock all balance each other. That simple composition felt right for a quiet interior like this. There was no need to overcomplicate it. The low light inside the temple meant I had to work carefully and let the warm tones do most of the work. The fast 17-55mm lens helped me hold onto the candle glow without losing too much detail in the darker parts of the room.
Most people visiting Phuket Big Buddha pay attention to the huge statue and the views over the island. I was more interested in this smaller corner inside the complex. It says something different about the place. Instead of scale, it shows routine, memory, and reverence. That is what made me stop and take the photo. For me, it works as a quieter record of the site, and one that feels more personal than the wide exterior views I usually came away with.
