About This PhotoThe Story Behind
I took this photo during a visit to Kōdaiji Temple in Kyoto, Japan. The sakura tree was the star of the show, looking almost mythical under the moody sky. It's springtime in Kyoto, and the cherry blossoms were just as legendary as locals say. The weather was a bit overcast, which added a dramatic backdrop to the soft pink blooms cascading down the tree. Kōdaiji Temple is a lovely place to wander around; it's famous for its beautiful Zen gardens and traditional architecture. The temple grounds were pretty quiet that day, so I really got to soak in the peaceful atmosphere and take my time setting up the shot.
I used my FUJIFILM X-T5 camera with the XF16-80mm lens to capture this scene. The wide-angle lens was perfect for bringing in the entire landscape while focusing on the intricate details of the cherry blossoms. The intricate wooden architecture on the left really complements the natural beauty of the tree, creating a nice balance between man-made and natural elements. You can see the surrounding evergreens that frame the garden, which is typical of temple gardens in this region.
Kōdaiji has a fascinating history, founded in 1606 by the wife of a prominent Japanese warlord, Nene, for her late husband. The place exudes a sense of serenity, and visiting it during cherry blossom season feels like stepping into a different world. It's one of those places that make Kyoto such a special city, where tradition and nature meet beautifully. I felt lucky to capture this moment, and I hope it shares even a bit of the tranquility I experienced there.
