About This PhotoThe Story Behind
This shot is from my early morning walk along Ninenzaka in Kyoto, Japan. I woke up around 5:30 AM to make sure I could capture the street without the usual crowd of tourists. It was quite a challenge, but totally worth it to get this peaceful moment. Ninenzaka is a historic street leading up to Kiyomizu-dera, with its traditional wooden buildings offering a glimpse into Japan's past. While walking there, I thought about how many have walked this path over the centuries, perhaps on their way to the temple. I used my FUJIFILM X-T5 with a XF16-80mm lens, which helped me get a great perspective of the empty street. The natural light at this time of day was soft and cool, highlighting the textures of the old wooden buildings and tiled roofs. The lanterns still glowing added a warm touch to the scene, creating a nice contrast. Shooting in the quiet of the morning like this was a rare, calming experience. I love how the gentle curve of the street draws you in. If you ever visit Kyoto, try to see Ninenzaka early like this—it’s a special experience.
