Staromestske Namesti
About This PhotoThe Story Behind
I took this photo on a chilly evening at Staromestske Namesti, where the vibrant heart of Prague beats with history and modern life. The image captures the Prague Astronomical Clock, an iconic landmark mounted on the southern wall of the Old Town Hall. Dating back to 1410, this medieval timepiece is the world's oldest operational astronomical clock, showcasing remarkable craftsmanship. Beside it, the towering spires of the Church of Our Lady before Týn create an impressive silhouette against the night sky. This Gothic church, originating from the 14th century, adds a mystical charm with its twin towers visible from various city corners. The lighting in my photo was quite challenging but rewarding. The subtle blend of artificial lights from the street below illuminated the architectural details beautifully, while casting a warm glow that contrasts nicely with the cool tones of the sky. I positioned myself to include the bustling Christmas market in the foreground, adding a lively element to the serene backdrop. The market's festive stalls brimmed with smiling faces and colorful lights, enhancing the photo’s dynamic range. Balancing the exposure to highlight both the bright market and the dimly lit church required some adjustments in post-processing, but I’m pleased with how the final picture portrays the enchanting essence of Prague.
