About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Vondelpark in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on a warm afternoon in early autumn. I took this by the pond in the middle of the park, with the fountain throwing up a small rainbow and bikes resting in the grass nearby.
What I liked most was how ordinary and relaxed the whole scene felt. People were sitting by the water, talking, reading, or just stretching out in the sun, and nothing in the frame felt staged. It had that easy Amsterdam mix of park life and cycling culture, where bicycles are never far away and a sunny day pulls everyone outside.
I framed the photo with the tree branches hanging in from above because they gave the view a bit of shape without making it feel closed in. The leaves were starting to turn, so there is a mix of late green and early yellow across the top of the frame, and that helped set the season without needing anything dramatic. The fountain in the distance gives the picture a clear center, but the bikes and the people on the near side of the water keep it grounded and personal.
I also liked the little rainbow catching in the spray. It is not the kind of detail you build a whole photograph around, but it adds something quiet and lucky to the scene. The light was soft and low enough to bring that out while still keeping the colors natural.
I shot this with a fairly wide view so I could include the pond, the fountain, the overhanging branches, and the bicycles all in one frame. For me, the photo works because it feels familiar rather than dramatic. It is just a calm moment in Vondelpark, the kind of afternoon that makes a city park feel like part of everyday life instead of a stop on a list.
