About This PhotoThe Story Behind
A large leaning tree in Vondelpark, Amsterdam, photographed beside the pond near Vondelparkbuurt. I took this photo on a bright autumn day while walking along the path by the water.
What caught my eye was the shape of the tree first. It stretches low and wide across the grass, almost like it has been slowly folding itself toward the pond for years. The branches spread out in every direction, and with the soft yellow and brown leaves still hanging on, it felt like one of those quiet park scenes that only really works when you stop for a minute and look properly.
I framed it from the path so the curve of the gravel edge leads into the scene. The water on the right balances the weight of the trunk, and the two birds near the shoreline add a small bit of movement without taking attention away from the tree. The houses in the background also help place it in Amsterdam without making the picture feel busy. It is still very much about the tree, the bank, and the calm water.
The light was simple and clear, probably late morning or early afternoon, with enough sun to bring out the green grass and the warm tones in the leaves. I did not want to overcomplicate it. A mid-range wide view was enough to keep the full spread of the trunk and branches in frame while still holding some detail in the plants along the pond.
I like this photo because it shows a quieter side of Vondelpark. It is not about crowds, bikes, or the usual city energy. It is just a peaceful corner of the park, a tree with a lot of character, and a calm moment that felt worth keeping.
