About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Grossmünster and the Limmat River in Zürich, Switzerland, just after sunset from the Rudolf-Brun-Brücke side of the old town. I made this photo in the blue hour, when the sky had turned soft purple and the lights along the waterfront had started to reflect in the water.
I was standing near the river by Rathausbrücke, looking toward the twin towers of Grossmünster and the row of old buildings along Limmatquai. That angle gave me a clean view of the church rising above the riverside facades, with enough open water in the foreground to let the reflections breathe. The river was calm but not perfectly still, so the lights stretch and break a little across the surface instead of turning into a flat mirror. That small movement is a big part of why I like this frame.
What pulled me in was the mix of cool and warm tones. The evening sky and the blue water feel quiet, while the lit windows, street decorations, and the church towers bring in a gentle warmth. There is also a nice everyday feel to the scene. It is a well-known part of Zürich, but at this hour it felt relaxed rather than busy. People were moving along the embankment, though the main focus stayed on the architecture and the reflections.
I kept the composition simple and vertical so the towers and their reflections could work together in one frame. The extra height also helped me include more of the water, which is really the second subject of the photo. I used a longer exposure to smooth the river slightly and hold the soft evening light without losing the detail in the buildings. For me, this is one of those Zürich views that feels familiar for a reason. It is calm, balanced, and easy to come back to.
