Étretat Coast
About This PhotoThe Story Behind
I took this photo on a cool morning at the Étretat Coast in France, capturing the breathtaking cliffs that stand majestically against the sea. These cliffs, formed by natural erosion, are world-renowned for their striking arches and natural sculptures. The weather was partly cloudy with a dazzling play of shadows and light, enhancing the dramatic texture of the limestone. In the foreground, a row of small boats rests on the pebbled beach, their vibrant colors standing in contrast to the earthy tones of the surroundings. The rising tide gently laps at the shore, adding a subtle dynamic element to the scene. Historically, these cliffs have inspired countless artists and writers, including Claude Monet and Gustave Courbet, drawn by its unique beauty and atmospheric light. From a photographic perspective, I aimed to balance the composition by using the rule of thirds, positioning the horizon to divide the sky and ocean. The lighting was naturally soft, providing an even tone across the scene, which I found perfect for capturing the detailed textures of the rock formations.
