About This PhotoThe Story Behind
St Paul's Cathedral from the One New Change rooftop in the City of London, England. I made this photo in the evening, with the dome filling the right side of the frame while a bright figure in neon stood against the cooler London skyline.
What I liked most was the simple contrast that held the whole scene together. The pale stone of St Paul's, the blue and grey sky, and the glass towers in the distance all feel quiet and muted. Then that strong neon green breaks the calm in a very direct way. It changes the balance of the photo immediately and gives the wide city view a human point of focus without taking away from the building itself.
I shot this from the public rooftop terrace at One New Change, which is one of the best spots for a clear, open view of the cathedral at this height. From this angle, the dome feels close and solid, while the modern buildings to the left help place the scene in present-day London. I also like how the terrace edge runs across the frame and keeps everything grounded.
The light was soft and slightly uneven, with brighter sky behind the dome and darker cloud moving across the city. That gave me enough separation to keep the cathedral strong in the frame without the scene feeling too flat. I used a fairly wide focal length on my 24-105mm lens so I could keep the rooftop foreground, the person, and the full dome together in one composition.
For me, the photo is really about old and new, quiet stone and loud colour, formal architecture and a more casual moment on a rooftop. London gives you this kind of mix all the time, and I liked how clearly it came together in a single frame.
