About This PhotoThe Story Behind

The Grand Staircase inside the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel in London, next to St Pancras station, is the subject of this photo. I took it during a daytime visit, when sunlight was coming in through the tall windows and lighting up the red walls, patterned carpet, and painted ceiling.

I photographed it from the upper landing so the curved banisters could lead through the frame and show how dramatic the staircase feels when you stand inside it. From that angle, the ironwork, arches, and the sweep of the steps all connect nicely, and the ceiling opens up above everything with its blue panels and gold stars. What I liked most was the contrast between the rich red walls and the cooler ceiling colors. The room already has a lot going on, but the daylight from the left side keeps it clear and gives the details some breathing space.

This part of the hotel has a strong Victorian Gothic style, and it feels more like a historic hall than a normal hotel interior. I wanted to keep that sense of height and decoration without making the composition feel too busy. A wide lens helped me include the staircase, the balcony, and the ceiling in one frame, which was really the only way to show how all those elements work together. The repeating patterns in the carpet and wall covering also helped tie the lower and upper parts of the scene together.

I like photographing interiors like this because they reward a slower look. The first thing most people notice is the staircase, but the longer I stood there, the more small details started to appear in the carvings, painted panels, and lights. It is one of those London interiors that feels instantly familiar once you see it, and in person it is even more layered than it looks in a single photograph.
