About This PhotoThe Story Behind
I captured this photo during a serene visit to the Lincoln Memorial, located in Washington D.C., a renowned monument that honors Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. The monumental marble statue, crafted by sculptor Daniel Chester French, captures Lincoln in a seated position. His expression is solemn and contemplative, embodying the weight of his leadership during the Civil War era. The grandeur of the structure, created by architect Henry Bacon and completed in 1922, is highlighted by the 36 columns that surround it, representing the states in the Union at the time of Lincoln’s death. As I stood in front of this iconic monument, the lighting was soft yet impactful, emphasizing the intricate details of Lincoln's coat and the folds of fabric that drape across his lap. The stillness of the space was both humbling and inspiring, as visitors quietly reflected on the historical significance of this great leader. While my camera couldn't capture the awe one feels in person, the atmosphere was truly profound, marked by the inscription above that reads: "In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever."
