About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Rowers on Lake Bled in Bled, Slovenia, with the Church of the Assumption of Maria near Mlino in the background. I made this photo on a bright spring or summer afternoon from the lakeside path on the southeastern shore, across the water from the church.
What I liked most was the contrast between the quiet, even movement of the boat and the layered backdrop behind it. The rowers sit low in the frame, while the white church tower rises above the trees and the rocky hillside behind it. That gave me a simple composition to work with: water in front, soft green shoreline in the middle, and the church and cliff closing the scene at the back. The light was still fairly high but already warm enough to bring out the fresh green tones in the trees and the pale stone in the cliff face.
I didn’t want to turn it into just another postcard view of Bled, so I waited for some activity on the lake to give the scene a bit more purpose. The rowing shell added that nicely. It also helped show the scale of the lake without needing a very wide view. I used a moderate focal length on my Canon EOS 7D with the 24-105mm lens to pull the church and the boat closer together and keep the frame clean.
The exact spot matters in this view. From the shore near the southeastern side of Lake Bled, looking toward Mlino, the church sits tucked into the trees below the cliff in a way that feels much more grounded than the usual island photos. I like that balance. It still feels recognizably Bled, but it shows a quieter side of the lake, with sport, local movement, and everyday afternoon light all in one frame.
