About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Camogli’s seafront and the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta are shown here on a bright afternoon in Camogli, Italy. I made this photo from the east side of Camogli Beach, looking back along the curved shoreline toward the church and the line of tall pastel houses.
What I like most about this view is how everyday it feels. People are spread out across the pebbles, the water is calm, and the town has that relaxed Ligurian look that seems effortless. Nothing dramatic is happening, but that is exactly why I wanted to photograph it. The scene felt balanced and lived-in, with the beach in the foreground, the church set right at the edge of the sea, and the apartments stacked tightly behind it against the hillside.
The light was strong and clear, probably late afternoon, with the sun coming in from the right and giving the facades their warm color. The deep blue sky and sea helped the softer yellows, pinks, and oranges stand out without making the frame feel busy. I also liked the contrast between the open water on the left and the dense architecture on the right. That shift gives the picture a natural rhythm as your eye moves from the bay to the beach and then into the town.
I framed it so the Bagni Lido building would hold the front right corner and lead the view back toward Santa Maria Assunta. Using the 17-55mm lens let me keep a fairly wide view without losing the sense of depth along the beach. For me, the photo is really about a normal, sunny day on the Ligurian coast and the way Camogli’s waterfront fits so neatly between the sea and the hills.
