Deer Of Rhodes
About This PhotoThe Story Behind
I captured this photo at the historic harbor of Rhodes, a truly mesmerizing place where past and present converge peacefully. The image prominently features two iconic deer statues standing guard over the entrance, a nod to the Colossus of Rhodes. Once a towering statue and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Colossus was a monumental representation of the sun god Helios. It was said to stand triumphantly at the entrance of the harbor until it was destroyed by an earthquake. Now, these elegant deer symbolize the long-lost wonder and are landmarks themselves. The fortified tower visible in the background is the St. Nicholas Fortress, built by the Knights of Saint John. In this shot, I particularly like how the clear blue sky and the sunlit fortress stand in contrast with the gentle azure of the sea. A yacht is gently anchored nearby, its modern design an interesting juxtaposition against the ancient stone structures. There are people enjoying their day, walking along the dock and soaking the scenery. I remember standing there, the sound of the Aegean breeze in my ears, feeling connected with both history and the vibrant life around the harbor.
