About This PhotoThe Story Behind
The Franciscan Church of the Annunciation stands on Prešeren Square in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and I photographed it on a bright day from the riverbank by the Triple Bridge. The view looks across the Ljubljanica as a sightseeing boat passes under one of the bridge arches.
I like this spot because it brings together several of the things that make the center of Ljubljana feel so easy to walk and photograph. The pink church sits behind the square and rises above the trees, while the pale stone balustrades of Tromostovje lead the eye straight across the frame. The river adds movement, and the boat gave me a simple foreground that made the whole scene feel more lived in.
The light was strong and clean, probably around midday or early afternoon, with a deep blue sky and thin clouds stretched across it. That kind of light can be harsh, but in this case it worked well with the pastel facade and the pale bridge. I waited until the boat came into the frame so the picture would not feel too still. The wake in the water and the people on deck add just enough activity without taking attention away from the church.
I framed the scene vertically from the embankment near the Ljubljanica, keeping the curve of the river at the bottom right and the church centered behind the bridge. The 17-55mm lens was useful here because I could hold the architecture, the bridge, and the boat together without the scene feeling cramped. What I like most is how everyday the moment feels. It is one of the busiest parts of Ljubljana, but the composition still feels calm, with the church, the bridge, and the river all sitting in balance.
