About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Girl with a Dolphin Fountain at St Katharine Docks in London, beside Tower Bridge, photographed on a bright summer day. I made this photo from the riverside path near the marina, with the fountain in the foreground and the bridge filling the background.
What I liked most was how clearly the scene layers together. The bronze fountain gives the frame a playful center, while Tower Bridge rises behind it with its pale stone towers and blue suspension details. The Shard also appears in the gap to the right, which helps place the view firmly in this part of central London. From this angle along the north bank of the Thames, I could keep the fountain, the bridge, and a bit of everyday activity around the dock all in one composition.
The weather did a lot of the work for me. The sky was deep blue with scattered white clouds, and that clean midday light made the bridge stand out without flattening the details. I also liked the small patch of tree leaves at the top right, which softens the harder lines of the architecture and keeps the frame from feeling too rigid.
I kept the shot fairly wide so the fountain would not feel cut off from its surroundings. That wider view let me show the full bowl, the curve of the promenade, and the scale of Tower Bridge behind it. For me, the picture is less about an isolated landmark and more about how these familiar London elements sit together in one lived-in public space. People are walking, stopping, and looking around, and that casual movement gives the scene a natural rhythm.
It is a well-known part of London, but I was not trying to make it look grand or dramatic. I just wanted to show the spot as I found it: bright, open, busy enough to feel real, and anchored by one of the city's most recognizable bridges.
