About This PhotoThe Story Behind

I took this photo on a bright and clear day in Rhodes, capturing an iconic scene that perfectly encapsulates the blend of history and daily life. On the ancient stone pier, two men are indulged in a leisurely fishing session under the sun, a common sight in this Mediterranean locale. The azure waters of the Aegean Sea provide a vibrant backdrop, contrasting beautifully with the rough beige stones of the ancient fortress. This fortress, known as the Fortress of St. Nicholas or the St. Nicholas Lighthouse, stands proudly in the background, a testament to the island's rich history. Built in the 15th century by the Knights of St. John, it originally served as a key defense against naval attacks. The fortress’s stout, round walls and the towering lighthouse, topped with a Greek flag fluttering in the light breeze, hint at its enduring strength and historical significance. There was no wind that day, which made the water surface appear smooth and seamless, mirroring the blue sky above. Such scenes evoke a sense of timelessness, highlighting how the past and present coexist harmoniously in Rhodes. With high cliffs and a scattered array of stones leading the eye towards the horizon, this picture not only captures the everyday life of Rhodes but also invites contemplation about the layers of history that envelop the island.
