A Square in Ljubljana

The Hercules Fountain on Stari trg in Ljubljana, Slovenia, is the subject of this photo from one of my visits to the old town on a bright summer day. I took it in the quiet part of the day, looking up from the square toward Ljubljana Castle on Castle Hill.

I liked the way the fountain holds the foreground while the row of old buildings and the castle tower stack up behind it. That mix says a lot about Ljubljana in one frame. The square feels open and calm, but there is still plenty going on in the details: the curved stone edge of the fountain, the red roofs, the balconies, and the heavy green slope rising behind everything. The castle does not dominate the whole picture, but it is still clearly present above the trees, which gives the scene a strong sense of place.

I made this photo from ground level in Stari trg, close enough to let the fountain fill the left side of the frame without losing the buildings across the square. The light was strong and clean, with deep blue sky overhead and enough sun to bring out the warm tones in the facades and roof tiles. I also like the slight blur in the falling water. It keeps the fountain from feeling too static and adds a bit of movement to an otherwise still city scene.

A moderately wide focal length worked well for this kind of view. It let me include the full fountain, the line of houses, and the castle above without making the square feel too stretched. For me, this photo is really about the everyday look of central Ljubljana. It is not a grand city panorama. It is just a simple view across one square, with the fountain, the old streets, and the castle all fitting together naturally.
