About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Prešeren Square in Ljubljana, Slovenia, photographed on a warm late-afternoon or early-evening walk, shows the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation and the stone balustrade of the Triple Bridge. I made this photo in the center of the city as the low sun lit the square from the side.

I was standing on the Triple Bridge, looking toward the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation and the Prešeren Monument, with the elegant facade of the Hauptmann House area catching the same golden light on the right. What I liked most was the mix of still architecture and constant movement. The buildings are sharp and calm, but the people passing through the frame blur slightly, which gives the square a lived-in feeling without turning it into a crowded scene.

The light was doing a lot of the work for me. It was one of those clear evenings when the sun drops low enough to warm up the pink church front and the pale stone railing at the same time. The sky stayed blue, with a few soft streaks of cloud, so the colors felt balanced instead of heavy. I kept a low, slightly angled view along the bridge railing to pull the eye into the frame and lead it back toward the church tower and the monument.

Prešeren Square is one of those places that changes every few seconds. Someone sits on the railing, someone else crosses the bridge, a small group pauses for a moment, then the scene shifts again. I wanted to keep that sense of motion while still holding on to the shape of the square and its landmarks. For me, that combination says a lot about central Ljubljana: historic buildings, open public space, and a relaxed everyday rhythm all meeting in one spot.
