About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Love locks at Fort Point National Historic Site in San Francisco sit in front of the Golden Gate Bridge on a bright day. I photographed this view from the waterside fence near the southeast side of the fort, with the bridge tower rising behind the mesh and the bay moving below.

What caught my eye was the contrast between the rough chain-link fence, all the old padlocks, and the clean blue sky behind them. Some locks are rusty and worn down, others are painted or shaped like little hearts, and together they turn a simple fence into something personal and a little messy in a good way. The Golden Gate Bridge gives the whole scene a strong backdrop, but I liked that it stays partly blocked by the fence instead of taking over everything.

Fort Point is one of those places where you can get very close to the south end of the bridge, and that angle makes the structure feel huge. The water was choppy when I was there, and the light had that clear midday look that brings out the red of the bridge and the different colors scattered across the locks. I framed it so the fence fills most of the photo, with the tower and lower span showing through the gaps. That made the picture feel more about the objects people left behind than just another bridge view.

I took this on my iPhone using the ultra-wide camera, which worked well because I could stay close to the fence and still hold the bridge in the background. I like how that wide perspective keeps the foreground busy and textured while still giving enough space for the bay, the shoreline, and the bridge to read clearly.
