About This PhotoThe Story Behind
The Hungarian Parliament Building on the Danube in Budapest, Hungary, photographed at dusk from the Buda side near Batthyany Square. I took this during blue hour, when the last color in the sky was still visible and the building lights had fully come on.
I like this view because the Parliament stands out so clearly from across the river. The warm light on the facade and dome contrasts with the cooler tones of the sky and water, and that mix only lasts for a short time in the evening. From this angle, the full length of the building is easy to read, and the river gives it a bit of breathing room instead of crowding it with the city around it.
The scene also shows a quieter side of central Budapest. The embankment is calm, the water is smooth enough to pick up the gold reflections, and the boat moving through the frame adds just enough life without pulling attention away from the main subject. I also kept some of the foreground rooftops and the church spire on the right edge, because they help place the Parliament in the wider city rather than turning it into an isolated postcard view.
I shot it from an elevated position on the Buda bank, looking east across the Danube toward Kossuth Lajos Square and the Parliament. The fading light gave the sky soft purple and pink tones, which worked well with the illuminated stonework. A mid-range focal length on my Canon EOS 7D let me keep the composition tight around the building while still leaving enough of the river and skyline to show the atmosphere of the evening.
