About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Autumn tundra at Bønntuva on Kvaløya, near Tromsø, Norway. I photographed this upland landscape on a cloudy fall day, with low Arctic vegetation turning red and gold under a heavy sky.

I liked how open and exposed this place felt. The ground rolls gently across the frame, and the small footpath pulling through the tundra gives the view a quiet direction without taking over the scene. Farther back, a few hikers and a simple stone cairn sit on the ridge, which helped me keep a sense of scale against the mountain line in the distance.

What drew me in most was the contrast between the foreground and the sky. The autumn colors are soft but still rich, especially the patches of red bilberry and rusty brown brush spread across the hillside. Above that, the clouds are dark and layered, with a few brighter breaks that let some light through. It felt like one of those typical northern weather shifts where the landscape changes every few minutes.

I framed the photo wide to keep the balance between the textured ground, the long horizon, and the peaks beyond. The mountains are pushed back enough to feel distant, which made the tundra itself the main subject rather than just a foreground for the view. That was important to me, because Bønntuva is not only about the mountain backdrop. The plateau has its own character, especially in early autumn when the vegetation starts changing before the higher ground is fully covered by snow.

This part of Tromsø has a quiet kind of beauty that I always come back to. There is no dramatic single landmark doing all the work. It is more about space, weather, and the feeling of walking through open ground with big views in every direction. That is what I wanted to hold onto in this photo.
