About This PhotoThe Story Behind
A redwood forest trail in Muir Woods National Monument near Mill Valley, California. I photographed this along the Hillside Trail on a bright daytime walk, where the steps curve uphill through the trees.
I liked how the path gives the whole scene a quiet direction. The wooden steps pull the eye forward, while the redwoods rise straight up on both sides and make everything feel taller than it first looks. Sunlight was filtering through the canopy in patches, so parts of the trail and the low green plants were lit up while the trunks stayed darker and heavier. That contrast is what made me stop.
This part of Muir Woods feels a little more tucked away than the flatter boardwalk sections near Redwood Creek. The trail climbs gently, and from this angle you can see the slope of the forest floor, the ferns along the edge, and the dense stand of coast redwoods continuing deep into the background. I wanted to keep that sense of depth instead of isolating one tree, so I framed the path low in the foreground and let the trunks fill most of the image.
I shot it with the phone's very wide lens, which helped me include both the height of the trees and the shape of the trail in one frame. That wider view also makes the vertical lines feel stronger, especially with the stairway leading up through the middle right side. It is a simple forest scene, but I like how it shows the scale and calm of a walk through Muir Woods without trying to overstate it.
