About This PhotoThe Story Behind
I took this shot during my trip to Brugge, Belgium, a place that feels like stepping back in time with its medieval architecture. This spot, Rozenhoedkaai, is particularly special. It’s one of the most photographed places in Brugge, and for good reason. The canal's still water creates a perfect reflection of the historic buildings and gives this scene a mirror-like quality. I used my Canon EOS 7D with a wide-angle lens to capture as much detail as possible from this perspective.
What's interesting is that Brugge is often dubbed the 'Venice of the North' because of its network of canals. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site, so you’re literally surrounded by history. Around twilight, the lights begin to glow warmly from the buildings, adding a cozy touch to the serene scene. The weather was kind, offering a clear reflection on the water.
While setting up the camera, I noticed how the flowers in the foreground added a pop of color, contrasting nicely with the more muted tones of the buildings and water. The wide-angle lens helped bring everything into view, from the lingering details of the old architecture to the vibrant foliage below. It's these small details that help to give the photo a sense of depth, making you feel almost as though you’re standing right there on the canal’s edge.
