About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Grøtfjord beach and village in Tromsø Municipality, Norway, photographed from the hillside above Grøtfjord on a bright, partly cloudy day in early autumn. I took it looking down over the bay, with the sandy shore, scattered houses, and steep mountain walls all fitting into one wide view.
What caught my attention was how quickly the weather kept changing across the landscape. One minute the sun was lighting up the grass and the red roofs, and the next a cloud would slide over the mountains and cool everything down again. That back-and-forth gave the whole scene a nice balance. The water stays calm and flat, while the sky feels heavy and active above it.
I like that this part of Grøtfjord feels both open and sheltered at the same time. The beach curves gently along the bay, but the mountain rising on the right side makes the village look tucked in and protected from the wider sea. From this higher roadside vantage point, I could include the full shape of the shoreline, the small cluster of homes, and the darker peaks further back. It gives a clear sense of how people actually live in this landscape, not just how dramatic the scenery can be.
The simple colors helped a lot in this frame. The green fields, pale sand, blue water, and red buildings all separate naturally without feeling too busy. I shot it with my iPhone 14 Pro, and the wide lens worked well for holding the village, beach, and mountain slope together in one composition. It was one of those unplanned stops where the light did most of the work for me, and I just had to wait a moment for the sun to land in the right places.
