About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Brosmetinden above Ersfjorden in Tromvik, Norway, photographed on a late summer evening. I made this image on the descent from the ridge, looking down over the fjord as broken light moved across the mountains and water.
What I liked most was how calm the whole scene felt even with the heavy clouds building overhead. The sun was slipping through a gap on the right side of the frame, and that light spread across the water in a long bright band while the darker peaks stayed in shadow. It gave the view a strong contrast without feeling harsh. The trail in the foreground also mattered to me. It pulls the eye into the frame and gives a real sense of being on the mountain instead of just looking at it from a distance.
From this spot above Ersfjorden, the rocky ground, the worn path, and the steep drop toward the shore all helped tell the story of the hike. A couple of small hikers on the path add scale, which is useful in a place like this because the mountains can otherwise feel almost too large to read. I kept a fairly wide view so the image could hold both the texture of the foreground and the broad shape of the fjord beyond. That balance was important to me. I didn’t want only a landscape backdrop; I wanted the photo to feel like part of the walk.
This was one of those moments in northern Norway when the weather kept changing every few minutes. The clouds looked heavy and dramatic, but the water stayed smooth and quiet below. That mix of rough sky and still fjord is what made me stop and take the photo.
