About This PhotoThe Story Behind

The golden onion domes of a Russian Orthodox church in Moscow, Russia, photographed in soft late-afternoon light. I made this photo during my time in the city, focusing on the upper part of the building and its small architectural details.

I liked how the frame cuts out almost everything except the domes, crosses, and the top edges of the facade. That tighter view let me pay attention to the shapes and colors instead of the whole church. The gold tops catch the low sun, while the pale blue sky stays plain and quiet behind them. It gave me a simple background and made the domes stand out more clearly.

What pulled me in most was the contrast between the polished gold, the pastel pink walls, and the green trim around the towers and rooflines. Moscow has many churches with this kind of layered decoration, but I didn't want a wide documentary view. I was more interested in the repeating forms: four domes at slightly different heights, thin supporting wires, small arches, and the stacked patterns running up each tower.

I shot it in a straightforward way and kept the composition clean. The Canon EOS 7D with the 24-105mm lens helped me isolate these upper details without needing to show the street or surrounding buildings. That felt right for this scene. The photo is less about the full landmark and more about the rhythm of the architecture.

The title "Some Details" fits how I remember the moment. I was walking through Moscow and stopped because the light was hitting just the top of the church. Instead of trying to explain the whole place, I just wanted to keep this small part of it.
