About This PhotoThe Story Behind

I took this shot during a visit to Kyiv, Ukraine. It's a scene from inside one of the city's subway stations, where the escalators seem to stretch endlessly upwards. The station has this kind of old-school, but still functional feel that I really like. The symmetry of the escalators and the way the lines lead your eyes up to the top is something I aimed to capture with my camera. Using my Canon EOS 7D helped me get just the right angle, and the EF24-105mm lens was perfect for grabbing the full scope of the scene.

Kyiv's metro system is actually the third largest in Eastern Europe, after Moscow and St. Petersburg. I found that pretty interesting. The city seems to blend the efficient design of these metro stations with local culture effortlessly.

While I was there, I took some time to check out the history behind these places. These escalators are part of a daily routine for thousands of locals, and it’s intriguing to think about how many stories pass through here each day. The lighting is pretty unique too, with the light posts along the escalators adding a futuristic touch to the classic structure. I always try to find a balance between natural light and the starker, man-made lighting, which was a fun challenge here.

If you're ever in Kyiv, the metro is definitely something you should see. It's not just a way to get around; it's a piece of the city's character. It's one of those places where the ordinary becomes extraordinary just by stopping and taking it all in.
