Sunset at Surin Beach

Sunset over Surin Beach in Choeng Thale, Phuket, Thailand, photographed from the shoreline just before dusk. I made this frame at the water's edge on the west coast, looking straight out over the Andaman Sea as the last light dropped toward the horizon.

What I liked most was how simple the scene felt. A low line of waves was rolling in, the wet sand was reflecting the sun, and a few footprints in the foreground gave the beach a quiet human presence without taking over the frame. The sky had a mix of soft cloud and open light, so the sunset wasn't completely clear or completely blocked. That helped spread the warm glow across the water and gave the darker parts of the sea a bit more texture.

I shot this from a very low position near the edge of the wash so the curve of the sand would lead into the surf. That small strip of reflective beach became an important part of the picture for me. It balances the bright sky and keeps the foreground from feeling empty. The waves were strong enough to add movement, but not so wild that the scene lost its calm mood.

Surin Beach is one of those places where the light changes quickly in the evening, and I remember waiting through a few ordinary moments before everything came together for a short stretch. The sun dropped into a gap in the clouds, the reflection tightened on the wet sand, and the next set of waves arrived at the right time. I used a wide zoom for this view because I wanted the whole scene in one frame: the foreground sand, the band of surf, and the open sky above. For me, the photo is really about that brief balance between motion and stillness that you get on a beach right at the end of the day.
