About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Red Square in Moscow, Russia, photographed at night from the square beside Lenin's Mausoleum, with Saint Basil's Cathedral on the left and the Spasskaya Tower rising behind the Kremlin wall. I took this during blue hour, when the sky was still deep blue and the lights had started to define the whole scene.

I like how this part of Red Square changes after sunset. In daylight, the space feels open and busy in a different way, but at night the landmarks stand out more clearly. Saint Basil's Cathedral immediately pulls the eye with its domes and patterns, while the clock tower and the long red wall give the frame a strong line from right to left. Standing near the mausoleum let me include all three elements together without breaking the balance of the composition.

The evening light did a lot of the work for me. The warm floodlights on the Kremlin wall and towers contrast nicely with the cooler sky, and that mix is what I remember most from being there. The square was still full of people walking across the stones, so I kept them in the frame instead of waiting for an empty moment. Their slight motion blur adds to the feeling of a famous public place that never really goes still.

I shot it with a fairly wide view, which helped me keep the cathedral, mausoleum, and tower in one frame while still showing the open foreground of the square. What I wanted most was a straightforward night view of Red Square that felt true to being there: bright lights, a steady flow of visitors, and those instantly recognizable Moscow landmarks lined up under the evening sky.
