About This PhotoThe Story Behind

A temple interior at the City God Temple in Shanghai, China, photographed during my time in the city. I made this photo inside the main hall in the old Shanghai area, facing the altar straight on.

What caught my attention was the balance of the space. The glowing columns of small lights on both sides, the hanging lanterns above, and the carved wooden structure around the altar all line up in a very ordered way. In the middle, the seated figure, the incense burner, the flower arrangements, and the offering tables bring everything together. It felt busy at first glance, but once I stood still and looked at it through the camera, the scene had a calm and almost perfectly symmetrical structure.

I liked how warm the whole room felt. The gold and orange light from the lamps fills the frame and gives the woodwork a soft glow. There are also small details that keep the image interesting, like the blue-and-white vases, the red donation boxes in the foreground, and the darker ceiling beams that stop the brighter parts from taking over. The mix of color and texture is what made me stop and spend time on this composition.

I used a wide lens for this one because I wanted to include the full altar area and the lanterns overhead without stepping too far back. That wider view also helped emphasize the symmetry and the depth of the hall. I kept the framing centered and simple so the arrangement of the room could do most of the work. For me, the photo is really about the atmosphere inside the temple and the careful design of the interior rather than any single object on its own.
