Cenote Xkeken

I took this photo at Cenote Xkeken in Yucatán, Mexico. This spot is a natural sinkhole that's really cool to explore. The way light filters through the opening at the top creates a glow on the blue water below. I was careful to capture that effect with my Canon EOS 7D Mark II. Using a wide-angle lens let me get the entire scene in one shot, which was perfect for showing off the cave's unique shape and the water's vibrant colors.

Cenotes are quite common in this area of Mexico. They're formed when limestone bedrock collapses, revealing groundwater underneath. Historically, they were considered sacred by the Mayans, who used them for rituals and as a water source. Being here, you can feel the history and the peaceful atmosphere.

I loved the different textures on the cave walls, from the rough stone to the smooth surfaces where the water has worn away the rock over time. The contrast between the shadowy cave and the bright blue pool is striking. It's interesting how the stalactites hang down from the ceiling like ancient ornaments.

Visiting and photographing places like Cenote Xkeken makes me appreciate nature's simple beauty. It's easy to lose yourself for a moment, just standing and taking it all in. If you ever find yourself in Yucatán, this is definitely a place worth checking out.
