Colorful vases in Justice quarter

Colorful vases on a building facade in the Justice Quarter of Luxembourg City. I photographed them in daylight while walking through the Cité Judiciaire area on the Saint-Esprit plateau.

What caught my eye first was the line of oversized vases fixed along the wall, each one a different color and each one reflecting the street back in a slightly warped way. The large blue vase in the foreground does most of the work in this frame. It mirrors the building opposite, a patch of blue sky, and a few small figures passing by, which gives the photo a second layer without making it feel busy.

I liked how the repetition runs down the side of the building: blue, yellow, turquoise, red. The black wall lamps help set the rhythm too, and the pale facade keeps everything simple around the stronger colors. It is a very urban scene, but the playful design makes it feel less formal than the government and court buildings nearby might suggest.

I took this from close to the wall so the nearest vase would dominate the frame and the others would fall away into the background. That angle also made the reflections more noticeable. The curved surfaces bend the architecture around them, so the street looks familiar and distorted at the same time. It is a small detail, but it says a lot about walking in Luxembourg and noticing how public spaces are put together.

The light was clean and even, probably around the middle of the day, which worked well for the glossy finish and strong color. I used the zoom range on my 17-55mm lens to compress the row a bit and keep the composition tight. For me, this photo is really about finding something unexpected in a part of the city that many people might otherwise pass through quickly.
