About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Luxembourg City spreads out from the Corniche in this daytime view over the old quarter. I made this photo on a bright spring or early summer day in Luxembourg, looking across the Pétrusse Valley toward the fortified edge of the city.
What I liked most was how much of Luxembourg fits into one frame without feeling crowded. The old stone walls, clustered roofs, church spires, and thick green trees all sit on top of each other in a way that feels very specific to this city. From this side, the height changes are easy to see. The lower houses sit down in the valley, while the historic upper town rises behind them along the cliffs and fortifications.
The viewpoint near the Chemin de la Corniche gives a clear look across the Grund and up toward the center, and that layered perspective is really the reason I stopped here. It is not a wide open skyline kind of view. It feels more intimate than that, with streets, rooftops, gardens, and defensive walls stacked closely together. The contrast between the heavy stone fortifications and the fresh green trees also stood out to me right away.
The light was strong but clean, with long streaks of cloud pulling across a deep blue sky. That gave the whole scene some movement without taking attention away from the city itself. I used a fairly wide focal length on my Canon EOS 7D with the EF-S 17-55mm lens so I could keep both the foreground slope and the city beyond in the frame. That extra foreground helps the view feel grounded instead of looking like a distant postcard.
For me, this photograph works because it shows Luxembourg as I remember it: compact, elevated, green, and shaped by its old walls.
