About This PhotoThe Story Behind

Panorama of the Grund district in Luxembourg City, photographed in daylight from the Chemin de la Corniche. I made this image on a clear day, looking down over the Alzette valley and the old streets below.

I liked how much of the lower city opened up from this spot. From the wall along Chemin de la Corniche, the view stretches across the bend of the river, the gardens, the old stone buildings, and the tall spire of St. Jean du Grund. The church sits right in the middle of the scene and gives the whole frame a strong anchor, while the roads and paths around it pull the eye through the rest of the neighborhood.

What drew me in was the contrast between the steep cliffs and the calm layout of the district below. You can see how Grund is tucked into the valley, with the historic walls rising behind it and the water wrapping around the buildings. The light was bright and even, which worked well for a wide panorama like this because it kept the details clear from one side of the frame to the other.

I wanted to show the feel of Luxembourg City from above, not just a single landmark. The gardens on the left, the river cutting through the center, and the church and old houses all help explain the shape of the place. It is a layered view, and that is what made me stop and take the photo. A panoramic format felt like the right way to hold all of it together without cutting off the edges of the scene.
