About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Portofino harbor in Portofino, Italy, seen from the water along Calata Marconi, photographed on a bright, clear day. I took this view while looking back at the pastel waterfront houses and the steep green hillside that rises behind the village.
What pulled me in was the contrast between the neat row of painted facades and the dense mix of pines, cypress, and terraced gardens above them. Portofino is small, but from this angle it feels layered. The harbor edge is busy with shutters, balconies, arcades, and little details in the walls, while the upper part of the frame becomes quieter and more natural. That split is what made me stop and make the photo.
The light was strong and direct, which worked well for the color in the buildings. The reds, yellows, oranges, and soft creams all stand apart from each other, and the deep blue sky gives them a clean background. The water in front adds another band of color and a little movement, with the boats sitting low across the bottom of the frame. I liked keeping some of the harbor water visible because it makes the whole waterfront feel grounded and gives the village its proper setting.
I framed the scene straight on from across the small bay so the buildings read almost like a continuous wall of color. The hillside villas above them help show how tightly Portofino is tucked into the landscape. I used a mid-range focal length on my Canon EOS 7D with the 17-55mm lens, which let me keep the scene natural without pushing the perspective too wide. For me, this photo is really about the everyday look of Portofino in full sun—calm water, colorful facades, and that compact harbor front that makes the village so recognizable.
