About This PhotoThe Story Behind
Ferries on Lake Como at Torno ferry dock in Torno, Lombardy, Italy, photographed in soft late afternoon light. I made this photo by the waterfront in Torno as one of the lake ferries was taking on and dropping off passengers against the steep hillside across the water.
What I liked most was the everyday feel of the scene. Lake Como is often shown as a polished travel destination, but I was more interested in the regular movement of people coming and going by boat. The ferry fills most of the frame, with its white body, red lower hull, and bright life rings standing out against the darker water and the mountain behind it. The town across the lake climbs up the slope in layers, so the background feels busy without pulling attention away from the boat.
I photographed it from the side of the dock, close enough to keep the boarding platform, mooring posts, and the edge of the pier in view. Those details matter to me because they place the ferry in a real working setting instead of turning it into a postcard version of Lake Como. The light was fading a bit, and that gave the hills a muted blue-green tone while a little warm sunlight still touched the upper left part of the frame. Leaves hanging in from the top right helped me frame the scene and softened the harder lines of the pier and vessel.
I used a practical zoom range for this one, which let me keep the ferry large in the frame while still including the lake and the hillside town behind it. I like how that balance shows both the scale of the boat and the character of Torno at the same time. For me, the photo is less about a dramatic moment and more about the rhythm of travel on the lake.
